Candidates Sought for San Juan District Committee

The Mullis Community Senior Center of San Juan Island is preparing to hold an election to fill fifteen open positions on our District Committee. Terms for District Committee positions to be filled are five 1-year terms (for 2019), five 2-year terms (for 2020), and five 3-year terms (for 2021).

If you are interested in representing the needs of our growing senior population, contributing to our wonderful community, and meeting new people, please consider joining the District Committee. You must be a resident of San Juan District (including San Juan, Henry, Brown, Spieden, Stuart, Johns, Pearl, and Flat Top islands) to be considered. Two-thirds of the District Committee leadership must be age 60 or older or disabled, creating an opportunity for interested persons UNDER the age of 60, who care about the well-being of our San Juan Island elders, to run for election too. District Committee responsibilities include:· Representing the needs and interests of San Juan Island seniors and disabled persons· Acting in an oversight capacity to Mullis Center management and in an advisory capacity to County Senior Services management.· Providing fiscal and fiduciary oversight of the District and its senior center.· Attending monthly District Committee meetings and any special meetings. The Committee has been working remotely via Zoom throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, therefore using technology is an essential skill for District Committee members.Nomination ProcessIf you are interested in becoming a Nominee,please go to the Elections page for candidate information and Nomination Form.Nominees are required to:· Complete the Nomination Form, including a brief Bio/Interests/Capabilities statement· Provide WA State photo ID that shows proof of residency (address within the district)· Provide WA State photo ID that shows proof of Age· Certify, with a signature, if you are living with a disability Please submit your application to Nomination forms must be received no later than September 15th. The Nominating Committee will review applications The final slate of candidates will be published in the October Senior Signal Newsletter along with the ballot. The slate will also be posted on the website at the beginning of October.Who can vote in the forthcoming election for SJI members?Residents of San Juan District (including San Juan, Henry, Brown, Spieden, Stuart, Johns, Pearl, and Flat Top islands), who are ages 60 and over, or have a disability, and are Members of the Mullis Center are eligible to vote. How do I prove I am eligible to vote?·      Provide WA State photo ID that shows proof of residency and age·      If disabled, certify with a signature that you are living with a disability·      Be a current Mullis Center member and appear on the current roster How do I vote?Voting may be done in-person at The Mullis Center (589 Nash Street) during the period of October 11-14, 2021, on Monday through Thursday, from 11:30 AM – 3:30 PM.  Voters must bring acceptable forms of identification outlined above to show their eligibility to vote and sign a Voter Register.Voting may also be done by mail using the mail-in ballot provided in the October Senior Signal Newsletter. Voters must certify (with signature) and provide copies of documents showing eligibility to vote (see above).   Mail-in ballots must be received by Thursday, October 14, 2021, in order for votes to be counted.
