Letter to Editor: You need to shout from your window!
By Mike Buettell, San Juan Island
Do you remember the movie”Network” (1976) where character Howard Beale shouts, “I’m as mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this any more” ?
Well, if you’re a Bernie Sanders disciple, looking at the primary process, you’ve probably been tempted to open a window and shout this to the world…at least once.
Now the “Occupy DNC” movement has posted this on its Facebook page:…”WE’RE READY TO GO ! Our goal is 50,000 new members ASAP and 1 MILLION STRONG TO THE CONVENTION! Everyone add as many Bernie supporters as you can to make this happen—-nothing more important than 1 Million strong.”
Seriously? What is this, Woodstock 2016? Have these guys forgotten what happened at the Democratic Convention in 1968? Oh, sorry, I forgot the majority of the “Feel the Bern” group weren’t even alive then. For those of you who have forgotten, or didn’t exist in ’68, Humphrey lost to “Tricky Dick,” who ran on a “Law and Order” campaign. (And we know how that turned out).
Look, the GOP is on the ropes with Trump as its standard bearer. The general election is in the bag for the Democratic party UNLESS it does something really stupid like turn its convention into an episode from Game of Thrones. The stakes are far greater than who is our president for the next 4-8 years. The next president will most likely nominate several Supreme Court Judges and impact a generation. Have you seen Trump’s 11 possible candidates?
It’s okay to be angry; but maybe a better slogan to scream out the window is: “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
