Safe Shippers – How Many More Ships for The Salish Sea?

Dear Safe Shippers,

San Juan Islanders for Safe Shipping and FRIENDS of the San Juans have just released the “Salish Sea Vessel Traffic Projections,” an informational flyer that details 18 terminal and refinery projects in the Salish Sea.

These new, expanding or proposed projects would add an additional 5,300 annual vessel transits to and from ports in British Columbia and Washington State. This would mean a 43% increase in large, commercial marine vessel traffic in our waters.

Safe Shippers Say “No!” to More Harm to The Salish Sea
Stay tuned, and get ready! We will soon be sending you information on ways Safe Shippers can say, “Enough already!” to two projects that are currently open for public comment:

1. Westway and Imperium Oil Terminals in Grays Harbor are planning oil-by-rail-by-vessel projects. Their Draft Environmental Impact Statements (DEIS) are now open for comment.

NOTE: The “Salish Sea Vessel Traffic Projections” (see above) already needs to be updated to include the proposed crude oil terminals in Grays Harbor. The DEISs include ALL the proposed vessel traffic entering Puget Sound so that the project proponents will have the option of delivering crude oil to the refineries and/or for bunkering purposes.

2. The Shell Refinery in Anacortes is planning an oil-by-rail expansion. Comments on the scope of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) are now being taken (remember our comments for the Gateway Pacific coal terminal EIS? It’s time to dust some of them off!)

NOTE: Because it is unclear if and to what extent Shell’s proposal would increase vessel traffic in our waters, it is not included in the “Salish Sea Vessel Traffic Projections”. Nonetheless, there is the likelihood, so we must be ever vigilant.

Given the potential cumulative impacts of these projects and others, stand at the ready, Safe Shippers, to speak out for the entire interconnected water system of the Salish Sea!


Safe Shippers Say “Yes!” to Protecting The Salish Sea

To reduce the risks posed by increases in fossil fuel exports, FRIENDS of the San Juans will lead a trans-boundary effort in both Washington State and British Columbia to designate the Salish Sea as a “Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA)” under the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

A PSSA designation is a tool that the global community can adopt for an area that needs special protection because of significance for recognized ecological, socioeconomic or scientific reasons, and because it may be vulnerable to damage by international shipping activities.

  1. Thanks so much for posting this important information for us islanders! Here’s a reminder that the scoping comments for the Shell Anacortes oil-by-rail project are due November 5. Safe Shippers will be sending out more information soon regarding the commenting opportunity for the two Grays Harbor projects. Those comments will be due November 30. Islanders’ Voices are needed!
